I’m really enjoying teaching a ‘Weight Loss Series’  for ONSITEWELLNESS, a division of Frenkel Benefits, LLC.

During our 4th class we discussed the importance of protein to preserve lean muscle.  Those of you  in my class probably remember, muscle not only looks good but helps increase our energy and metabolism.

When people lose weight they are often focused on the wrong number- counting lost pounds.  Proper weight loss is just as much about losing inches as losing pounds.  We are not helping ourselves if we are just losing weight by losing muscle.

Here are 3 tips to Maintain your muscle but lose weight:

Tip #1:   Make sure you are eating or taking Leucine!

Leucine is an amino acid that is not manufactured in our body.  It must be obtained through foods.  Leucine plays a significant role in the maintenance and repair of muscles and in preventing the breakdown of muscle protein during exercise.

Top 5 foods that contain leucine? Red meat, nuts, beans, nonfat milk, brown rice

Tip #2: Protein!

Below are sources of Protein that we need every day for hair, skin, nails, digestive enzymes and much more.

As you can notice from the chart, protein also comes from vegan sources.  Here is also a food pyramid to help you see how you can receive your protein without meat or diary.

You miss a variety of color, texture and taste of our foods by limiting our protein to animal.

Tip #3: Don’t be afraid of fat.

As I’ve discussed in my class and on my blog- there are 3 types of fat: the good, bad and Evil (trans fat).

Here is a guide to different types of fats:

During my class welooked at some of the foods from Arbys’, McDonalds etc to see how much actual fat is in them.   We also made a Crisco sandwich form the amount that was in those dishes. Crisco is a tansfat. That was a great visual way to see what that fat looked like.

If you are interested in losing weight and want to make sure you are getting the right amount of leucine in your diet Here is a program I recommend with my clients if you are interested in losing weight and want to make sure you are still getting all the proper nutrients and vitamins (such as Leucine)

My love for dance started in college.  It began with modern, ballet and Nia.   I had found what gave me my spark and zest for life.  Dancing not only made me feel positive and sharp but also had an amazing impact on my body. (Hello gorgeous legs!)

When I was 30 I had twin boys.  My priorities shifted and personal time for myself was very limited.  I put my kids as my #1 priority and neglected myself.  I started to feel sluggish and tired all the time.

Eventually I knew I had to get back into a routine so that I still had a piece of how I felt back then. This would make me a better mother and overall person- plus as a nurse I knew how important exercise is for your health.

I was introduced to Shaklee’s supplements and shakes. Before, I was exhausted from chasing kids around all day, a month into the shakes and supplements I noticed I wasn’t falling asleep watching the 6 o’clock news. I started taking a walk in the evening.

Fast forward 20 years, now I’m over 50, own my own business, have less energy (again), time is valuable AND I have some knee and back pain.

Sound like another good excuses not to exercise, right?

Wrong again!

I’ve realized that the key to a happy and healthy life is to never give up exercising.  If you have an injury find another for of movement you can practice until you are well again.

Exercise impacts everything- your body, mind and spirit.

No more excuses.

Excuse  # 1  Lack of Energy:  ‘I have no energy to work out!’

I  gave this same excuse in my 20s.  I realized that I needed to change my diet and add supplements to give me the energy to exercise and make sure my muscles were recovering properly.

I started on a Shaklee shakes

When I started taking these my energy skyrocketed !

Excuse # 2 Not enough time!

Make exercise part of your daily schedule (like brushing your teeth.)

Keep exercise fun and try new thing until you find what you love.  For me it’s dance, yoga and chi gong. For extra motivation- find friends who want to do the same thing.

You can do it!
