Holiday overindulgences begins early, starting with Halloween (if you have children), and multiple Thanksgiving holiday dinners at all the relatives. Then we continue with the pre-holiday parties, Christmas dinners, and all this lingers long past New Year’s celebrations. By the first week in January we feel bloated, listless, probably gained some weight and worst of all, we also feel unhealthy!

Luckily we can reverse this situation with an intelligent detox program.

You can take 15 days to get you back on right track by:

  1. eliminating the foods that contributed to this condition.
  2. eating foods that will build back a healthy body,
  3. supporting your body with the proper supplements.

Part 1 – Eliminating Bad Foods

  • Foods that increase sugar cravings are your first item to eliminate. I have always said where there is a will there is a waistline. This is not always true. There are foods that create a deficit in the body, so that after you eat them, your body craves more. It’s physiological. You will end up eating more. Here are some examples: white flour (bread), white sugar, diet soda, alcohol, cookies, potato chips, etc. We know the drill. Have you ever noticed that bread is served before dinner at a restaurant? This is so you will eat more because you will crave more!

  • Cutting foods out of your diet that you are sensitive to is the next important strategy. Many people are sensitive to gluten and it acts as an appetite stimulant. Gluten can cause gas bloating, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), inflammation and learning disabilities in children.

Part 2 – Optimize Your Diet

  • Healthy shakes are a great way to increase the nutrients, are very convenient and a good one can balance your blood sugar, so you don’t end up overeating.

  • A great rule to live by is to make ½ your plate vegetables, ¼ starch and ¼ a protein. It will give you the balance your body needs for fiber, antioxidants (neutralize toxins) and protein to repair tissues.

Part 3 – Use supplements to enhance the process. We don’t get all our nutrients from food so we need supplements to:

  • Neutralize toxins: Antioxidants( plant foods) and polyphenols (plant foods).

  • Cleanse and  alkalinize: Herbs like alfalfa that have chlorophyll that clean the blood

  • Boost the liver: Milk thistle, reishi and schizandra mushrooms will preserve liver cells and increase bile flow

  • Pump up the gut and digestion: Acidophilus will keep the gut healthy so we can absorb the nutrients needed for everyday detox

  • A sponge like a fiber supplement to helps escort the toxins out of the body. We get ⅓ of all the fiber we need from our diet

I have been to numerous parties and it’s very common to hear when I mention the Detox we are starting on January 7th, that they are interested. Because let’s admit it, we are all eating these we normally don’t eat. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the festive food, but when you are feeling tired, bloated and sick, it’s time to do something about it.

So for you overachievers who want to get a head start on your skinny resolutions, I’m going to share with you Sun’s Flat Belly Detox Program:

1st thing in the morning, have the Wake-Up Detox Lemonade (Take 20-60 minutes before having breakfast)

  • 16oz water (hot, cold, or room temperature)
  • Juice from 1 lime
  • 1-2 Tbsp of Shaklee Performance, any flavor (I use Orange flavor)
  • 1 stick of Shaklee 180 Energy Tea, any flavor (I use Pomegranate flavor)
  • Optional: 1 Tsp Vivix for Anti-Aging at the cellular level
  • Optional: Fat-burning spices – pinch of one or all of turmeric, ginger, cayenne pepper

For breakfast, have a Vitalizer Strip.

Before going to bed, take Shaklee Herb-Lax (1-4 tablets, adjust daily as needed for 2-3 easy bowel movements each day without getting diarrhea.)

Eat every 2-3 hours. We recommend the Shaklee 180 JumpStart program to lose fat, not muscles:

  • 3 healthy protein/fiber meals (1-2 Shaklee 180 Smoothee Meals with fruit and/or veggies, and for the remaining meal(s), fill your plate with: ½ of starchy veggies, ¼ of carbs or fruit, and ¼ of lean protein.)
  • 2-3 protein/fiber snack bars

DAILY TIP (from Martha Willmore and Harley Pastemak)

  • Drink lots of water every day! Remember, water is fiber’s best friend. A good rule of thumb is to drink half your weight in ounces of water (i.e. drink 80oz if you weight 160lbs).
  • Avoid red meat and dairy during the detox.
  • You need 1lb of vegetables for every 50lbs of body weight to balance your pH.
  • Continue to eat as natural as possible and avoid artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, or preservatives.
  • Reduce processed foods, sugar, red meat, and white flour as mush as possible.

Remember this can be used for a couple of days before you either start our Detox program on January 7th, email me at dianamaltz@gmail.com for more information, or your own.  And if you will be doing ours, please visit our online store to order the products for this simple, but yet effective, Detox.

Winter can be challenging in terms of our moods. We tend to eat more sugar, carbs, pastries and drink more alcohol, especially since we are celebrating the holidays. In addition, some people suffer from depression and moody dispositions.
According to Dr. Mark Hyman, MD, author of “Ultra Mind Solution”:
  • 20 million Americans have depression
  • 40 million suffer from anxiety
  • Anti-depressants is the second most prescribed medication in the US, after cholesterol medication
  • And approximately 14% of the population suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D)

Don’t despair, there are a few things you can do.

One of my favorite things to do during winter is a daily Chi Kung practice. Chi Kung teaches through specific movement, focus and breath work a way to rejuvenate the body. Daily practice will add ease and joy to your day. A good move are hip circles, which helps the kidney meridian, a good way to destress the body.

Nutritionally here are some supplements that can help balance the mind, mood and body:

  • B-Complex: Better known as the Happy Vitamin. It helps prevent sugar cravings, converts food to energy, regulate blood sugar and makes office/life more peaceful.
  • Moodlift (St. John’s Wort): If you live in Europe, a psychiatrist would recommend St. John’s Wort for mild to moderate depression, insomnia, mild anxiety, and migraines.
  • Vita D-3: It improves heart and brain functions, sleep, can help prevent cancer, and enhances weight loss.
  • Omega Guard (Fish Oil): It helps prevent memory loss, depression and reduces the risk of heart disease.
  • Stress Relief Complex: It blunts cortisol production, relaxes the body and promotes alertness
  • Optiflora Capsules (Acidophyllis): It supports healthy immune system, digestion and protects the lining of the stomach from the acid environment.

And finally LAUGHTER! The idea is to relax and enjoy the holiday seasons. We change physiologically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body, our pulse goes up, and we breathe faster, sending more oxygen to our tissues. And laughter appears to burn calories, too. A researcher from Vanderbilt University, conducted a small study in which he measured the amount of calories expended in laughing. It turned out that 10-15 minutes of laughter burned 50 calories. So let’s laugh more this Winter!

ImageThe whole idea is to work with the body and not against the body. Exercising, taking the right supplements, eating healthy and laughing are ways to get your body back in balance, healthier and enjoy Winter.

So beat the blues and live life with Zest!
